Cancer Weakness, Fatigue, Wasting & Cachexia Treatment

If you are experiencing cancer weakness or fatigue, you are not alone. About 50% of all cancer patients experience some form of fatigue. Symptoms can include anything from general weakness to more serious conditions like appetite, weight, and muscle loss. Extreme life threatening symptoms like this are called cancer cachexia. Once a patient reaches the point of cancer cachexia, merely increasing calories and eating more has no effect. This condition can quickly spiral out of control and become deadly if left untreated.

Furthermore, advanced cancer patients have a 30% more chance in developing this lethal condition then other cancer patients. This makes it extremely important to become proactive and prevent symptoms from getting worse in the first place. So here are some natural solutions that can help you stay ahead of just about any cancer weakness or fatigue you experience.

Whey Protein.

Lack of energy, tiredness, and general cancer weakness can all be treated with whey protein. A mixture of whey protein that includes cysteine, albumin and lactoferrin is effective in treating moderate to mild cancer fatigue. In addition, whey protein not only treats cancer fatigue but also helps with treatment compliance and quality of life. A whey protein shake is a simple and quick way to fight cancer fatigue. Studies used 10 to 20 grams of whey protein per day to see positive results.

Protein Plus Leucine.

Muscle loss is extremely dangerous when undergoing cancer treatment. For the most part, no conventional treatments are available to help cancer patients combat muscle loss at this time. However, studies show simple casein and whey protein combined with leucine (Amino Acid) stimulated muscle protein synthesis. It’s important not to forget the addition of leucine since protein alone has still yet to prove effective for muscle wasting. Using either of these without the other might render this treatment useless.

Fish Oil & Omega 3.

Not only does fish oil protect the immune system like i mentioned in my last article, but it can also fight cancer weight loss as well. Fish oil is capable of preventing cancer related weight loss and even stimulates weight gain. This is extremely beneficial for cancer patients that have already been battling weight loss for some time. Fish oil is effective for both prevention and treatment of cancer weight loss. Alternatively, microalgae oil can be used if mercury and dioxin contamination is of concern.

Curcumin.

It almost seems like I find a new use for curcumin on a daily basis and today is no different. Curcumin has a number of positive effects on the body and now we can add “reversing cancer weight loss” to the list. However, while curcumin did in fact increase body weight in colorectal cancer patients, it did not do the same for advanced pancreatic cancer patients. The reason for this is yet to be determined but might be due to the type of cancer or stage of disease. Either way, look closely at both studies and judge whether curcumin is the right choice for you.

    Hi,

I’m trying to get my Mother, who has end-stage PMP, to consume whey protein to help with her cachexia. I’m currently trying to give her 1 serving of 15 grams of whey protein per day in a hot chocolate form. Some nights she’s amenable, but most she is not.

It’s so difficult. She has little interest in eating or drinking and is VERY fussy about her food and how it is presented.

I have supplemented with 4 x Minami Nutritions Omega-3 (590mg EPA/130mg DHA) and 4 x Life Extension Super Bio Curcumin daily for the last 10 days.

How many grams of L-LEUCINE would you advise I add to her 15 grams of whey protein and which source of L-LEUCINE do you consider to be the best?

Thanks for the great site and keep up the good work.

    Many thanks.

      Steve,

Sounds like you are doing everything you can to help your mother. Fighting cachexia is not an easy task by any measure. Trying to combat the appetite lose is an uphill battle. Mixing whey protein into foods that she already likes is a great idea. Experimenting with various foods and making sure to add variety might be something to think about.

For instance, a company called Orgain makes (pre-made) meal replacement protein shakes with added nutrients similar to something like ensure but a healthier alternative. The shake alone won’t make a huge difference, but it can add more calories and extra protein to your mothers diet. Shakes like this might taste better to your mom and might make it easier for her to drink.

Keep an eye on sugar content if you decide to use pre-made meal replacement protein shakes. If you use orgain, then you will be ok for the most part. However, if you use some of the other options, they tend to have high levels of sugar that you may want to avoid altogether.

The study used 10% l-leucine or 4 grams total, as well as a 40 gram combination of casein and whey protein. Positive results were seen using this dosage and mixture. Stick to trusted brands of free form l-leucine and you should be fine.

I wish you and your mother healthy days ahead. 🙂
      Happy New Year
